Yasmine and Jahan Yousaf — the Chicago-raised sisters, vocalists, songwriters and DJs who make up EDM superstar duo Krewella — have a stronger bond than most, and not just because they’re related.
“There are so many moments onstage where I just look at her, and if I’m scared or nervous, I’m just like, ‘I’m good.’ She’s there,” says Yasmine Yousaf. “She’s holding it down for me, and I’m holding it down for her.”
The two have recently made news less for their music and more for being the targets of misogynistic comments from their male peers (and their troll-army of haters) on social media after a public fallout with former member Kris “Rain Man” Trindl in 2014.
Krewella is an American electronic dance music duo from Northbrook, Illinois, that formed in 2007.[1] The duo consists of sisters Jahan Yousaf and Yasmine Yousaf.[1] Originally a trio, their third member and producer Kristopher “Rain Man” Trindl resigned in 2014.[2] Their EP, Play Hard, was released on June 18, 2012, exclusively on Beatport, followed by an iTunes release on June 26, 2012.[3] Their debut album, Get Wet,was released on September 24, 2013, on iTunes.[4] Their musical style draws upon house, dubstep, hardstyle, techno and drum and bass. Their single ‘Party Monster’ has become a meme on Vine Japan, with Japanese girls and young women doing sexually suggestive dances to the beat.
Krewella is managed by Jake Udell and Nathan Lim of TH3RD BRAIN Man
2007-13: Formation, Career Beginnings, Play Hard, and Get Wet.[edit]
Krewella, formed in 2007, consisted of songwriting/vocalist sisters Jahan and Yasmine Yousaf along with producer Kris “Rain Man” Trindl.[6]The three met as students at Glenbrook North High School.[7] Their music is a blend of self-produced electro house and dubstep, with influences of many other EDM styles. All three members of the group have “6-8-10” tattoos to commemorate June 8, 2010, the day when the three agreed to give up their careers, schooling, and any other intentions for their lives, to dedicate all of their time to the trio’s joint music career.[8] In December 2011 Monstercat signed Krewella, “Killin’ It.” was Krewella’s first original song released by a label. Monstercat promoted Krewella with social media campaigns and partnered with EDM YouTube promotional channels for a larger platform. In June 2012, Krewella released their EP Play Hard. The album rose to #1 on Billboard’s Dance Radio Airplay[9] chart and the single placed on the Pop Radio Airplay charts.[10]
Krewella has headlined at EDM festivals around the globe including Ultra Music Festival,[11] Electric Daisy Carnival,[12] Stereosonic,[13] Spring Awakening,[14] Sunburn Festival and Paradiso festival. These live performances earned the 2012 International Dance Music Award for “Best Breakthrough Artist.”[15]
